How to Write your Perfect Affirmations

How to make your perfect affirmation. darrien minnie

Affirmations. They are thrown around like “self-care” candy, but what about when you are encouraged to tell yourself healing and loving affirmations and they don’t fit for you! Well, I do still feel that affirmations serve a purpose and that they can be adapted in many ways.

Through my time with positive affirmations in my life, I have learned to become flexible and it has taught me to listen to myself. For example, some affirmations in my trying to conceive days “I am pregnant.” or “I am fertile” would be hard for me to fully adopt within me. I would spit it out and not feel connected to it at all! So, I soon learned that some affirmations worked, and some didn't and some I needed to change and make work for me. Allow these affirmations to fit well for you in a way that pushes you to grow yet feel authentic. And particularly when I was working with affirmation card decks and a card was pulled that I couldn't jive with I would redraw. Who makes the rules up anyway?!

I soon learned so much about myself and then I was able to create my own affirmations that would fill my heart. And I want you to find your own affirmations too!

So let me share with you some things about affirmations.

What are Affirmations:

  • short mantra-like phrases

  • usually in the present tense

  • help to drive focus and awareness

  • It can motivate or inspire a certain way of feeling, or state of being.

  • usually start with

  • “ I am…”

  • “Today, I choose..”

  • “At this moment I feel”

  • I get that when you feel the furthest thing from what you are trying to affirm you feel fake. So let us take some baby steps. “I am working on ……” “I give myself grace and compassion for ….”

  • You can make them specific to your needs.

try it out a few times, if you can't connect with it the head back to the drawing board.

Affirmations are for you to create!

Why Do We Use Affirmations:

Affirmations are a fantastic way to support the subconscious mind and change some of the self-limiting beliefs we hold. Affirmations are not a quick exercise think of it as planting a seed. There are many types of seeds that we can plant. We can choose a seed of a weed or a seed of a rose. We plant this seed in our minds and the act of repeating this affirmation to ourselves as we speak it out loud or write it down and place it somewhere we can see it regularly is the equalizing of watering, and shining sunshine on our seeds to grow.

What seed do you want to plant?

Have you seen the video where there are two plants at a school, one is told affirmations and compliments and the other is told harmful and bad things about it….. care to guess which grows and thrives?

How to Write your Perfect Affirmation:

  • Find a nice quiet place, create a soothing atmosphere with gentle music for example.

  • I love to diffuse essential oil blends such as “Into the Future” or “Valor”

  • Grab a pen and paper! Heck grab some markers and colorful pens and let’s have some fun!

  • Take a moment to ground and center yourself. Take 3 full deep breaths and bring your awareness to your body and your mind

  • Acknowledge your current state allow your open mind and heart to tell you what you wish to work towards.

  • Check-in with yourself, how are you feeling

    • Emotionally

    • Mentally

    • Physically

    • Spiritually.

  • Sometimes working backward can help. How are you feeling now? (in a lower state of being- sad, angry, anxious, lonely) And then the beauty of the internet takes that word and plug it into a get a list of synonyms. You can often find some insight things and then if you are feeling disconnected to this whole affirmation thing I suggest “I choose to move towards feeling ….”

  • Based on that information you may have some insight and inspiration for an affirmation.
